Overview

This fast paced, interactive half-day programme gives participants the knowledge and skills needed to conduct high quality appraisal interviews. Managing Performance is a key leadership responsibility and at the heart of that responsibility is (i) goal setting and (ii) feedback, including running formal appraisal interviews. This training covers the key elements of the appraisal process, namely, the ability to: set clear goals; give feedback; deal with ‘aggressive’ people and handle ‘difficult’ conversations. By the end of the workshop participants will be confident in their ability to run an appraisal interview that benefits the employee, the manager and the business.

Understanding Performance Management Concepts

Good Performance Managers appreciate the three types of Appraisal that need to take place in order to motivate people, and have an understanding of the key components of designing a formal Appraisal Scheme. This involves reviewing:

  • The three types of appraisal
  • Scheme Design
  • Scoring and rating process
  • Preparation for the appraisal meeting
  • Planning to assess performa
  • Writing ‘good quality’ goals

Running an Annual Appraisal Meeting

How to conduct a successful appraisal session.

Handling Disagreements

It is not uncommon to have a certain level of disagreement in an appraisal meeting (and sometimes there is actual hostility.) In these cases the skilled Performance Manager uses ‘assertive communication techniques’ to cope with difficult situations. Techniques at their disposal include:

  • The Three Step Assertive technique
  • The Broken Record technique
  • The Fogging technique

Putting it all together

Planning and running a formal appraisal meeting.

Case study: participants discuss their real life scenarios, role play them with a colleague and receive feedback on their performance



Feedback

Feedback is based upon peer review using Boulden assessment checklists. Completing the assessment checklists is not only valuable to the people involved in a given role play or case study, it also helps those completing them to gain an in-depth understanding of the building blocks that make up an outstanding appraiser.
